On September 3rd 2007 Commanding Officer Guiles received a phone call from Mr. Don Krampe. Mr. Krampe explained that his brother Mr. Hugh O’Brian wanted to come down to the city of Temecula and meet with the Temecula Valley Young Marines. Mr. Krampe had informed Mr. O’Brian that our unit was the Unit of the Year and we had been awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for the second time. At 1600 on the 27th of September, Mr. O’Brian sat down with the Young Marines. He had the Young Marines and parents come around in front of him and sit
,
,. Mr. O’ Brian began his talk with the Young Marines and told them a little bit about himself. He had several Young Marines who are 17 years old to stand up. He then told all of the Young Marines that, the Young Marines standing in front of them are the same age he was when he was a Drill Instructor at MCRD Paris Island in 1943. Mr. O’Brian was the youngest person to ever be a Marine Corps Drill Instructor. Mr. O’Brian talked to the Young Marines about HOBY, the importance of a getting a higher education and good grades. Mr. O'Brian then asked a young marine to stand up and talk about their unit's Recruit Training program, former Young Marine SSgt. Joshua Smith told Mr. O'Brian exactly how we train
. Mr. O’Brian then had Young Marine Pvt. Joshua Haydon stand up along with Young Marine Pvt. Makayla Taylor to help out with a magic card trick and a message about fate, supporting each other, and believing in each other
. His next trick involved the importance of not smoking which involved Young Marine LCpl. Jacob Aguilar and SSgt. Kaiser from the local recruiting station (Mr. O’Brian wanted to meet with him since the Temecula Recruiting station is soon to be the top recruiting station in the Nation)
,
. The final trick involved Young Marine LCpl Tyler Boudreau and CO Guiles
. This was an honesty question and the CO answered right with a “firecracker.” When the conversation ended Mr. O’Brian asked for all of the kids to step outside with him to take a picture
,
,
. The Young Marines and the CO took a picture with Mr. O’Brian then the CO asked for the parents to step in so they could have a picture as well
. It was a short visit but a very motivating one at that. To have a living legend want to make a special trip to see a Young Marine unit was indeed an honor that the Temecula Valley Young Marines will never forget. As Mr. O’Brian said to the Young Marines “SEMPER FI, YOUNG MARINES!!! AND ALL OF THAT GOOD STUFF”. And thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson for letting us use your Office for this wonderful event
