Young Marines Natuional Schools 2009

Before I start telling everyone about the awesome time all of us had working at the National Schools… I want to gloat a little about our unit’s security force.  After all this is our unit’s website. I hope you enjoy the article sorry it took so long to post...

On July 13th 2009, the Temecula Valley Young Marines provided support to the National Schools while at the same time running the unit’s first Security forces’ school. The unit supplied 8 personnel to provide security during the hours of 2200 and 0500 to ensure the Young Marines, from all over the nation, attending school received the proper amount of sleep since they did not have to do their own firewatch. The small cadre and the CO returned to Temecula on July 1st, 2009. The Young Marines attending the Security Forces School were given community service hours for the hours they stood watch:

YM/1st Sgt Guiles 240 hours
YM/ Pvt. Bowker 144 hours
YM/Cpl. Tashoff  96   hours
YM/Pvt.  Rubio    80   hours
YM/ Pvt. Simms   72   hours
YM/ Cpl. Redick  56  hours

Young Marine LCpl. Tashoff received a meritorious promotion to Corporal from the National Executive Director for devotion to duty while working as support staff for the National Schools. Young Marine Cpl. Moralez was also present as support staff.

Several of our unit’s staff were also present to help run certain areas of the National Schools.

Mrs. Guiles National Schools Archery Instructor 26 hours
XO Aguilar Assistant National Schools Archery Instructor 26 hours
CO Guiles National Schools Executive Officer 391 hours
Mr. Tashoff Security Forces Officer 96 hours
Mr. Smith National Schools troop handler 228 hours
YM/MSgt. Guiles National Schools Class assistant 180 hours

The unit’s field kitchen was heavily used for two meals a day while at the National Schools.

Enough gloating… Now let’s talk about the awesome school that was run by Mr. Adams and Mrs. Lenker from the National HQ’s. The Classes were taught by Ms. Liestriscs and Mr. Hendricks.

Evening chow was provided by Mr. Cassidy of the South Orange County Young Marines and the HQ of the South Orange County YMs was used as the School’s admin section.

Mrs. Ballentine did a great job as the Medical Officer for the Schools.

This year’s school was held at Camp Talega, the most northern camp on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The students were phenomenal.  They were all there to learn and not just play around.  I will say that the Registered Adult Leaders’ School (RALS) was a great class too.  The adults that attended this course were very professional.  They learned the same classes as the Young Marines, they drilled and they even did didi’s for their chow.

The Young Marines were treated at this year’s school with a few different things…  There was a beach day at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton’s San Onofre beach. They learned a couple of new things to bring back to their unit’s, such as Archery and air soft rifles for marksmanship training. At the end of each school was a mess night the Young Marines and staff had a great time at the mess nights, a tradition that hopefully will be brought back to their units.

It was a long three weeks but it was worth it.  In the end I believed Mr. Adams summed it up perfectly, “This has been the best National Schools for a long time. I am sure there will be more to come.”  Remember to check out the National School’s pictures page there were over 2,000 taken.

OOH RAH Young Marines and Adult Staff !!!!!
