It was a hot Saturday, the temperature raised to 103 degrees on the track. The first thing that was setup at our campsite was the first aid tent . This came in handy as one of the unit’s Corpsman, YM/LCpl. Master, manned the 1st Aid station . At times he was able to get out and walk the track. The Corpsmen would walk the track and ensure that anyone that was struggling or weaving was ok. At one point, in the 1st Aid tent, YM/LCpl Masters administered proper and effective 1st Aid to eight people with mild to severe heat exhaustion and dehydration. YM/LCpl. Masters stayed with one gentleman for nearly 2 hours, always checking the man’s condition. He was doing ok then as he got up to leave he became wobbly. YM/LCpl. Masters believed the gentleman was not doing well and that he needed to use the facilities. CO Guiles and Mr. Gray (a Parent volunteer) helped the man up the CO felt the mans pulse and the condition of his skin. The CO told LCpl. Masters to get the Paramedics. As the paramedics arrived they checked the gentleman out and called an ambulance. YM/LCpl. Masters gave the paramedics all of the information on the gentleman’s condition and how his progress was; with all of the information provided by him the Paramedics called an ambulance and transported the gentleman to a hospital.
The paramedics later explained that they had been walking by the First Aid station to check on the status of YM/LCpl. Masters patients. The Pechanga Fire Department’s Fire Chief said that YM/ LCpl. Masters saved the gentleman’s life today by being able to bring his core temperature down and talking him into taking fluids into his body. The Paramedics said if YM/LCpl. Masters had not been there or taken care of this gentleman as he did then hewould have died.
As night time approached we had the Luminaria slide show the Young Marines had gone around the track and placed the luminarias down and then placed a small green chem light into the bag , , , . The glowing luminariaas and the slide show were fantastic. Before the Lumiaria the CO made a promise to Mrs. Munoz she asked the CO earlier if they could celebrate her son PFC's Munoz's birthday. Of course the CO agreed kids sugar and a relay track this would be fun he said . After the birthday cake wore off some of the younger Young Marines “crashed and burned .” Some of the Young Marines pulled security at the front gate and others sat or walked and talked , , . YM/GySgt. Guiles was in charge of the Midnight Madness show and away he went… Some of the events that took place for Midnight Madness were Mountain Dew contest, 3 legged race, and other races and contests , . As the evening wore on some movies were played on the big screen for entertainment , . YM/GySgt. Guiles did an outstanding job keeping everyone entertained and keeping them busy. There were still a lot of relayers on the track and the CO was one of them along with Mr. Smith and Mrs. Aguilar . As morning appeared the CO was still walking . At 0630 the CO stopped and we all began to breakdown the campsite.
The time was near for the ending ceremonies and the Color Guard got ready to present the colors. The Color Guard marched out and everyone said the Pledge of Allegiance and the colors were retired , . People were recognized and some awards were given out the Mayor of Temecula the Honorable Mike Naggar gave the Temecula Relay For Life a Proclamation . Everyone was asked to walk a final lap and again taking a huge chunk of the track was the Young Marines as they took their final lap around the track The Units Color Guard was asked to lead everyone around the track , , , , , , , . As everyone left the Young Marines packed up their gear and did a police call on the football field. As the parents signed their tired Young Marines out the CO said goodbye until next drill . And the ideas were flowing for next years Relay For Life. We have put a list of all relayers and the Young Marines involved in the CO’s Challenge on (Page 3).
