What a hot 2007 Labor Day weekend it was whew !!! but on the 1st and 2nd of September the Temecula Valley Young Marines volunteered to support a local community event some Young Marines earned 12 hours of Community service hours for this event. The Co the Adjutant, Mrs. Aguilar, and Mr. Boudreau, along with Parent volunteers Mr. Blanchard, Mr. Rivera and Mrs. Munoz. All stuck it our with the Young Marines who stayed hydrated during the event. At time the heat reached around 114 degrees outside and not even the 4.7 earthquake that shook the arena could stop the participants or the Young Marines. The Young Marine once again helped out the Roy Rogers rangers shooting club our unit has been supporting them for 4 years now. The Roy Rogers Rangers Mounted Shooting club was formed in 2001 to promote the great sport of Mounted Shooting and the 'Spirit of the Game'. SASS Mounted Shooting is one of the nation's fastest growing equestrian sports. The elements of exhibition shooting, barrel racing, pole bending, and reining; all done while using two .45 caliber single action revolvers, loaded with 5 rounds each of black powder blanks to shoot ten balloon targets set in a random pattern called a 'stage'. Mounted shooters are timed through the stage determining raw time plus any penalties incurred; for instance, 5 seconds added to raw time for knocked over barrel, dropped gun, missed target. The contestant with the fastest overall time wins.
The job of the Young Marines is simple when they arrive they immediately take a head count and pass out the days orders. Then the Young Marines carry the equipment over to their safety area and start to set everything up under the watchful eye of the Unit Adjutant, Mr. Boudreau and YM/GySgt. Guiles, J
,
once the fill station is set up the Young Marines walk the arena with a cowboy who instructs them how to set up the courses
,
. The Young Marines start to fill up balloons attached to PVC pipe
, the next thing that happens is an NCO or staff member takes up a position to help hand the Young Marines their balloons before they run out to set up
,
. The Young Marines stand by and ready to set up their stations
. When the time is near the Young Marines run the balloons out to the cones that have a long holder in them
,
. The PVC pie and the balloon are placed on the holder and the Young Marines run back to their safety area. After the Range master sees that the arena is clear he sends the shooter and their horse down range to compete and the next group awaits their command to run out

. It was a hot and but fun day with all of the horse shooting and good old fashion western spirit in the air. The participants wore the same type of clothing that were worn in the 1800’s it was cool to watch
. On Sunday after the final two stages were complete the Young marines and the staff took in the local fair to see the events happening in and around the fair the CO grabbed his group of six Young Marines and they crammed themselves into the photo booth at the end of a building for a group photo
, towards the end of the day the Adjutant had enough and threw everyone in jail
,
It was another successful and fun weekend and another community service event fulfilled. Great job Young Marines Oooh- Rah !!
