SASS Mounted Shooting is one of the nation's fastest growing equestrian sports. The elements of exhibition shooting, barrel racing, pole bending, and reining; all done while using two .45 caliber single action revolvers, loaded with 5 rounds each of black powder blanks to shoot ten balloon targets set in a random pattern called a 'stage'. Mounted shooters are timed through the stage determining raw time plus any penalties incurred; for instance, 5 seconds added to raw time for knocked over barrel, dropped gun, missed target. The contestant with the fastest overall time wins.
On mothers day 2009 Mrs. Guiles, CO Guiles and a cadre of Young Marines were out in force to help support the Roy Rogers rangers the Young Marines did the normal event with blowing up and replacing the shot balloons. it was a hot day and a lot of work. In the end the Young Marines had a lot of fun and even earned a small donation for the unit from all of the riders. not the typical mothers day you would expect but it was was a special so a big thank you goes to the units adjutant Mrs. Guiles for working this event on her mothers day and to all of the Young marines that volunteered to be there. But a huge thank you goes out to all of the moms who let their Young Marines take part in this event on mothers day.
