SCRYM July, 2008 Encampment

On July 25th 2008 the Southern California Regiment of Young Marines (SCRYM), held it’s second encampment of the year. This time the Regiment camped out at San Onofre beach on Camp Pendleton . The campsites were secured by the Regimental XO Mr. Siegmann. The Young Marines arrived on Friday night and setup their camp sites , before long the Regimental CO pulled all of the Young Marines together. CO Guiles informed all of the Young Marine that they were there to have fun not work and just play. However the CO still lay out some basic rules and informed the Young Marines that their uniform for this encampment will be swimming trunks and a unit T-shirt. So with that the Young Marines settled in for the night. In the morning the Regiment was marched down to the Football field and they were treated to a pancake and bacon breakfast cooked by CO Ramirez for the East valley Young Marines and CO Guiles from Temecula . The Regiment was marched back to their Camp Site where Young Marines gathered a towel their bottles of SPF 5000 and off to the beach they went.  Before the fun began on the beach the Assistant Division Commander showed up, he was there to present the Temecula Valley Young Marines. With the Young Marine Commendation Service Award from the Division 6 Commander . The award was given to the unit with a by name roster of those Young Marines who attended the Linda Vista City Parade. With the Presentation by Sgt. Major Harkins over, field meet began. The Young Marines participated in events like the Canteen fill , Beach Volleyball , Horseshoes , Wheel Barrow Race Tug O’ War , the Beach ball push , Fireman’s carry and an Ocean Swim , . The Young Marines had a great time at the end of the field meet the Regimental CO gave the Young Marines time to play in the ocean waves. When the time came the Regiment formed up and made their way back up to their camp site. The Young Marines had a traditional bean, potato salad and Hot Dog dinner. After Dinner we had three more events we had the water balloon toss and then came the funniest event Mr. Siegmann introduced the Young marines too the “Chubby Bunny” this event involved stuffing as many marshmallows in your mouth and still saying chubby bunny . The Young Marines contest was won by YM/MSgt. Guiles from Temecula (stuffing 11 Marshmellows in his mouth) while Mr. Siegmann took the Adult staff trophy on that event. After the Chubby Bunny Event the Young Marines had a Young Marine Jeopardy game hosted by YM./MSgt. Guiles and written by Young Marine females from Temecula Valley (They had the best handwriting) YM’s Aguilar, Rivera, and Tashoff . At the end of the day the totals were added up and the winners of the field meet were 1st place Temecula Valley, 2nd place East Valley, 3rd place Eagles and 4th went to Miramar. The day ended and the fire watches took their posts scarying away Skunks and other critters. The next day was time to break camp and go home The Young Marines and CO Guiles played a few games and had a little fun before it was time to leave . And of course we had to get our Regimental photo taken on the beach . Everyone said goodbye to each other and left with their units. It was a fun time a good time to get together and just mingle and make new friends.
